Studio Fundamentals is an art and community space specializing in ceramic wheel throwing and hand-building. Founded in 2017 by May Ann Villanueva, we opened with the vision of offering a welcoming space to learn ceramic fundamentals as well as to those looking to continue and expand their practice. Balancing precise, technique-driven instruction with a fun approach to learning, students are encouraged to work thoughtfully and explore new forms without taking thingstooseriously. As our community has grown, so has our offering, with the inclusion of our open-studio program, drop-in sessions and community pop-up events.

If you want to watch an artist fully immersed in their practice, watch May Ann wheel throw. Its meditative, contemplative, even therapeutic. This same patience also shows up when she is teaching her students, the lucky few who are able to get a spot.

But in that same breath, she can flip a switch and become this bubbly firecracker, bursting with creative expression and spontaneous humour, often accompanied by her unmistakable laugh.

The fact that May Ann is able to travel between these two spaces, from methodical entrepreneurism, to an imaginative world full of curiosity and abstract thought, demonstrates why she has such a truly enviable skill set.

My time at Studio Fundamentals was phenomenal - and I don't use that term lightly. When we started Beginners Wheel-Throwing, a friend and I were extremely burnt out by the state of the world. We were looking for a space that could hold everything we were feeling while creating some pieces to carry along with us.

Not only was May Ann able to curate this space, but she did so with such attentiveness that we came out of the class flourishing and confident in our work.

We asked for direction over and over (and I never quite got past the beginning stages of wheel-throwing) but we laughed, held space for each other, got covered in clay and learned so much. May Ann even threw a birthday celebration for me during one of the classes! With community-care at the forefront, May created an intentional and authentic learning experience for us. If I could do it all over again, I would in a heartbeat.

4worldlovers: Georgina Lohan’s work has developed through extensive exploration & experimentation with materials.

Georgina’s work with porcelain began as an extension of her practice as a mixed media painter when she began working in wall mounted relief panels in ceramic, glass, painting and cast paper.

After gradually becoming more involved with clay, she established her first ceramic studio in 2007.

Her current studio is located in the hub of the recently established Eastside Arts District, providing a dynamic container for her creative practice.
