Pear Tree Elementary: what do users think?
Vanja: Pear Tree School is a forefront leader in childhood education. Their innovative theme-based methodology coupled with real-life knowledge application sets Pear Tree apart from all other schools in Vancouver. Pear Tree equips students with the skills and confidence to understand the challenges of the world in which they live, recognizing their responsibility towards others, the environment, and themselves.Lead by an exceptional team of Masters prepared teachers, the school offers an outstanding breadth of educational experiences, encourages academic intrigue, and sets the stage for lifelong learning. Enthusiasm for academic endeavor lies at the heart of the school, stimulating students to think deeply and explore ideas beyond the curriculum. Every pupil is encouraged to be curious, creative, critically aware, and to develop their passion and talent to their fullest potential. Pear Tree provides students with an abundance of opportunities to discover, pursue, and develop their skills, talents, and interests while being empowered to flourish and build healthy relationships with others and with the community.Pear Tree has a holistic student approach which ensures every member of the school feels valued, supported and encouraged, and has the confidence and determination to respond to setbacks in a resilient manner. Children are nurtured into confident, outgoing, inquiring, and creative young people. The faculty, students, and parents recognize and celebrate the benefits of having a diverse school community, in which individuals value themselves, one another, and the different contributions that everyone can make in the classroom, our wider neighborhood, and the world. It has been an absolute privilege having my child attend Pear Tree; I recommend the school whole-heartedly to families.
Darrick Boyes: It was a delight to see such a bright, and positive environment. Healthy and happy children excited to learn. I know that we are lucky to have progressive learning schools like this, and it definitely gave me hope for a better way to bring the best out of our children. The staff and the children all smiling and the chef cooking healthy food for the children. This would have been a dream come true when I was a kid.
Bob Li: the chef is a very good chef and he makes good food too
Delaram Norani: We decided to look for a private school after the pandemic hit. First of all, they never disclosed the fact that they have a group three certificate which means they are considered a school that doesn't have follow BC's curriculum. I found out about that after I called the FISA.The co-owner is a very unprofessional person that obviously only cares about money. I sent an email notifying the school that my daughter wouldn't attend PT. Below is his exact response. Very disappointing response from a school that its main goal should be kids' education."Regardless of your decision, the 1st tuition payment of $5,757 is still due at the end of May, as per your contractual agreement. This can be paid by cheque or e-transfer."The principal listens to your concern, but never really takes action as she believes, the school knows what they are doing and we as parents shouldn't interfere in what happens at school.Overall, a very disappointing experience. I would rather send my child to a public school and hire tutors instead of sending my child to an incompetent school like Pear Tree.Below is my husband's review that keeps getting deleted:Positives;this is a small, 50 student school that escaped the distractions of Covid because of its size.the project based learning approach is an interesting way to educate – if executed properlyNegatives; This is a “group three” independent school (link below) that is not obligated to follow BC curriculum or test to it. In fact, they are very reluctant to do any substantive testing to reassure parents that they are educating appropriately. "Trust us" is the operative phrase they use. They are not rated by the Fraser Institute, nor would they want to be we suspect. This is somewhat disingenuous, as Pear Trees marketing material claims that they are a "top Private School" without any effort to substantiate this, and indeed a stated school aversion to ”testing”. In our opinion, the level of education provided is inferior to that of the private school our daughter is now attending. The school facilities are “Spartan”, to say the least.Pear Tree is a tenant in a class C (old), unsecured commercial building and has no gym, no change facilities, no library, no campus, no auditorium, no music rooms, no cafeteria, no computer lab -these would be considered basic amenities for a "Top Private School".There is administrative dysfunction - for both terms, report cards (which provide little in the way of progress information for your child) were provided several days later than promised, and for term 1 were lacking in any mention of term progress – in their words, the school needed to “remedy the oversight" with a revised report some days later still. The particular teacher for grades 5-7 we unfortunately rate as poor to mediocre based on our parent teacher meets, feedback from our daughter, and feedback from other parents. In addition, she was absent from class for in excess of a month of school, and the school was not capable of providing a suitable substitute replacement. We believe teacher quality is THE critical factor in education quality. When we communicated our specific concerns with the principal, she informed us that she was in a much better position to evaluate the quality of her staff as a "professional educator" and defensively and summarily dismissed our concerns. Conclusion; We decided to move our child to St. Johns, as did other parents, as she faced two more years with this teacher and an unresponsive school which sees fit to charge top dollar for a poor to mediocre educational experience.
Dylan D: Not recommended-there are many good reasons to have your child attend a private school in BC including seeking a superior education and facilities. And if you are paying $15-26,000 in tuition, you should, at a minimum, expect these benefits.Unfortunately, Pear Tree can only offer a hot lunch.
Zahra Hudani: We love Pear Tree. It truly has a community feel. We appreciate the regular communication channels available to us as parents and feel informed throughout the year. They are also really responsive to any concerns or feedback which is important for us as parents. The group of staff are wonderful, very smart and kind, and focused on each individual students’ needs. They have built an inclusive environment and their project-based learning approach is practical and impactful. Our daughter has grown so much, both socially and academically, since being there. We also love their focus on being active and healthy. Our daughter absolutely loves the healthy hot lunch program and it takes a huge load off us as parents with meal preparation. They have PE everyday and some fun programs too like skating, yoga and gymnastics. We highly recommend Pear Tree!
Kate Chase: Pear Tree has been a wonderful experience for our daughter. In terms of academics, the project based learning approach is implemented with an enormous amount of planning and thought, and it shows in the high quality of the children's work! Pear Tree kids are learning to think deeply and critically about the big issues of our day.Socially, Pear Tree is a warm, welcoming environment and teachers are focused on fostering positive relationships and an understanding of diversity. We feel so lucky as a family to have discovered Pear Tree, and are excited to see what high school brings!
Irina Mackay: If you are looking for a school that fosters children's love for learning and helps them grow as confident, responsible and kind people then look no further! Our son started attending Pear Tree in Kindergarten and is now finishing Grade 1. He started off as shy and introverted and has since blossomed with confidence and is a lot more comfortable with public speaking and interpersonal relations. The reading and math skills acquired at Pear Tree surpass those of many other kids his age. We believe that this is due to Pear Tree's approach to education through project based learning which keeps students engaged and allows to apply their skills to real life concepts. Our son is always coming home excited about the themes explored at school and has developed a love for learning at Pear Tree. One of the other amazing things about this school is that they have an in house kitchen and chef and serve daily fresh meals and snacks to the students! Our son used to be very picky when it came to eating but since attending Pear Tree he is a lot more open minded to trying a variety of foods. As parents this is also very convenient for us since we don't have to worry about packing a lunch or snacks and we know that he is eating healthy and fresh food while at school. All teachers and staff are amazing educators and really care about students as individuals. The communication is excellent and we are always updated about our son's daily activities through the Fresh Grade app.The school also places a strong emphasis on physical education, with daily PE time and different activities such as yoga, gymnastics as even parkour! Our middle son is joining Pear Tree next year and we will be also sending our daughter to this school when it comes time for her to join kindergarten. We are delighted to have found this amazing community and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this school as an overall excellent choice for both academic and personal growth.
Sandrine Espie: Our son joined PearTree last year. He is now in grade 3, and our decision to change school for PearTree was the best decision for his socio-emotional and intellectual development. Pear Tree offers project-based learning opportunities. Kids develop various hands-on experiences as well as creative, artistic, engaging, collaborative, and fun projects. The small classes and combined grades enhance leadership and a sense of cooperation and peer support between students. The themes that students worked on every semester address some of the most pressing issues that this generation will need to understand, i.e. exploring their natural environment by going on various field trips to study birds, bees, weather and landforms.Pear Tree curriculum includes daily PE, music classes, french (all the teachers are bright, responsive and engaging). The school has a fantastic chef who cooks hot lunch on site (which exposes students to different flavours, textures, cultures etc.). PearTree's learning environment is challenging (in a positive way), supportive, vibrant, creative. I've seen my child flourish, and I know he will thrive this year thanks to the dedicated, experienced, and professional staff.
Crystal Ehresman: Pear Tree is the best option in the city for busy parents. Their curriculum is well-rounded in arts and athletics which really takes the pressure off from finding extracurricular activities. The days are extended compared to public schools, and there is a before and/or after-school care option. This was a huge relief to me because my schedule requires flexibility. I love not having to pack lunches or provide snacks. The in-school chef saves me the time and mental energy that comes with meal prep and I can count on nutritious snacks and lunches. Most importantly, the faculty, staff and students are wonderful people, and I know my daughter is well-cared for.
Penny Chuang: Our daughter attended Pear Tree Elementary since kindergarten. Their project-based learning really showed a different approach compared to traditional education. The teachers, the staff, and the kids work collectively and really make up a warm and welcoming environment. Pear Tree does not just focus on academic results, but rather shaping our kid to be growing in all aspects of life, into becoming a better part of the community. In addition, their hot lunch program provides healthy and various choices everyday, shout out to chef Borja! We are more than satisfied of what our daughter has been able to achieve and learn here. Our second daughter will be graduating pre-school next year, and needless to say, Pear Tree is our one and only choice for her as well!
Ryusei Koyama: I was a student at pear tree, and this school was the best school I ever went in my life! The cook’s food is really healthy AND good!
Luna G: Pear tree elementary is a small but exceptional school in Vancouver. My son could adjust well thanks to their careful attention and full support when we moved to this new city. My son loves Pear Tree’s tailored approach to teaching and learning. He’s learning how to learn in PTE. In particular, I like this about the school. PTE offers a variety of activities and special classes, so children can have diverse experiences. One more thing I must tell you is the best teachers with passion and professionalism. I highly recommend PTE.
Cailin Broere: We recently moved to Vancouver from Hong Kong where our daughter attended a top international school. We really wanted to keep her level of learning consistent with what she had experienced in HK and hoped to find a school that shared our values and also provided a diverse and global outlook. We found Pear Tree in our search and have been truly impressed.Pear Tree is a small school but its founders are committed to educating the whole child. Social, emotional and dietary health are all considered and nurtured on a daily basis. The PE program and outdoor learning opportunities are fantastic. Borja, the school chef, ensures that my daughter is eating healthy, hot meals and saves me so much time and stress during the week. Picking up my daughter from school and having her excitedly show me the perfect seashell that she found on her morning trip to the beach is really just one of the many aspects that make Pear Tree so special. If you are familiar with the PYP curriculum and its values and principles, I really encourage you to consider Pear Tree in your search. Innovative, enquiry-based learning is alive and well here.
Ryan Liu: Pear Tree is an excellent elementary school. Even though, the school is small but it's packed with everything your children need to know. Their directors and teachers are very friendly. Their staff knows every single child's name. I can see that all the students are having fun learning at school.
Lynn Wang: We went to the school when my son was 3 and we really impressed the education environment. Although the school is small and located in an office building, the kids still have plenty of space here and there. what we like the best is the school using most updated social events as study case and make us feel like our son is communicating with the society. very good school and very nice teachers.
Qin Luo: It is the best school for us, our oldest child studies in community 3 and she likes everything in this place ,and we hope our second child and youngest child could study at Peartree in near future!
Qin Zhang: Fantastic! It has a very friendly and respectful environment, my daughter Eva started at Peartree in September 2018, she was very shy and speak a little English at that time, but now she is very confident and enjoy everyday in Peartree, moreover she loves every Peartree's staff and students!By the way, Louisa Chen is really amazing!
Line Aune: What an inspiring place Pear Tree is! Our daughter started at Pear Tree Elementary last fall after loosing motivation at her previous school. After just a short while, after school starting, she started to love school again and she doesn't even want to leave at pick-up time.My daughter enjoys being in a class with other grades, where it is most important to excel on your own level. All students are closely followed up by their enthusiastic teacher. The teacher continuously keeps the students eager to learn by using different tools ; visual, arts and crafts, field trips and new technology, as well as using interesting themes as background. And how cool isn't it to have snake or salmon eggs hatching in the classroom? We also love that the school focuses on nutritious food and physical education every day (during last half year they have had martial arts, skating, yoga, climbing, dance class and a lot of different activities outside with Mr M)!All the above makes an excellent foundation for our child and I strongly recommend the school.
Neda Shahbandian: Today I went to this school for privet tour , after half an hour delay its manager (Paul) was coming he behaved completely impolite toward us, without any sorry for delay. He didn't show us anythings and just asked "what is your question?" when I asked my question he said :"there are all answers in their website". On the other hand this school is so bad and really small like a small daycare , I never will register my daughter in horrible school.
Ivy Irem Dreger: Our daughter started Pear Tree in September (Grade 2). After 3 years in a very elite and popular co-educational private school, we wanted something less traditional and more creative and innovative for her. She was getting bored and losing her creative spark. Even though she had no academic or emotional issues, she wasn’t very happy and wanted to be challenged.Pear Tree is a breath of fresh air for her because she gets to create new things daily and there is no time for boredom. She gets so much attention thanks to the small class size. Lessons are always connected to real life and incorporate so many different subjects. Project based learning is very beneficial for sparking creativity and mimicking real life work environment. Kids need to work in groups frequently and complete tasks together in a timely manner. All work is always completed and accounted for. You don’t end up with piles of half completed work at the end of the term. Kids are always out and about and go to so many educational and fun field trips. The PE and music programs are amazing. Thanks to her encouraging PE teacher, she participated at a cross country race even though running is not her forte. After only one term she already plays songs with her ukulele! The hot food program is amazing. Their chef prepares everything from scratch and makes very creative, healthy dishes. No more packing lunches and worrying about her veggie consumption!Pear Tree is a very special school. It might look small from outside, but somehow manages to fit a much bigger and more creative world into its space compared to a lot of schools with elaborate campuses. Paul and Alexis put so much effort into creating an outstanding education experience for all. They hire top notch teachers and staff that are so dedicated to their craft. Pear Tree is what 21st century education should be.Our daughter loves her school and never wants to miss a day. We feel so fortunate to be a part of Pear Tree family.

Mulgrave School: what do users think?
James Kartz: Basketball team bad but nice
Lora Gardiner: My granddaughter loves it here! If you are looking for somewhere that will support your learning needs and approve of LGBTQ2S+ and trans rights, it’s Mulgrave!“I’m just happy Mulgrave supports the LGBTQ2S+ and people from everywhere. I bet that there is at least one person from every single city in the world.”
Jacob Lei: Ethan Wang is my teacher for debate. Mulgrave did really well in the world scholar cup!ps I go to Westbay with Ethans brother Aiden
Iris Lo: We're so happy with our experience in Mulgrave. School is exceptional - from teachers to support staff to the community overall. Offerings are great and the school is so innovative. Our daughter is thriving there and we cannot wait for our second one to join this fall. Mulgrave has such a strong and tight-knit community!
Zhaoer Zhang: All three children in my family attend Mulgrave School. It has been seven years since my eldest daughter joined the school at the age of 3. Throughout this process, we have been very satisfied with the school. The teachers have a very good teaching level, and are very patient and friendly, and will communicate with parents in a timely manner. Children are happy to go to school every day. The school also has Chinese classes, four times a week, and the Chinese teacher will also give free after-school tutoring to some children in need.At the same time, the school has a unique community culture that is diverse and inclusive, and families, teachers, and other staff of all ethnicities get along well here. So, one of the reasons schools don't enroll in many grades is because no families want to leave, no places are available.
Cristina Fabio: We are so happy with Mulgrave since we joined the school 6 years ago! They build an extraordinary environment for our kids to grow as open minded thinkers with a great responsibility in their community!
Edmond W: Mulgrave is one of the most competitive schools in Vancouver, and for good reason. Not only is it amazingly impressive on the outside, but this extends through to the friendliness and professionalism of the leadership and the attention provided by the teachers. The facility is second to none, the IB curriculum is excellent, the after-school activities are extensive, and the students are genuinely happy to be there. Of the many dozens of Mulgrave parents who I've met, every one has had nothing but praise for the school.
sarira molaie: Since the first day I entered the school for a tour, I knew that I want my kids to study and graduate there! After 7 years of experiencing life in this fantastic community, not only me but my kids have no doubt about it.Mulgrave is not just a school, it becomes your second family with strong sense of belonging for students and pleasant experience of parents watching their kids thrive with the professional, caring and supportive teachers and staff, also all the world class facilities that creates the opportunity to all students to become the best version of themselves.
Flora Song: Best school ever! All my kids are attending Mulgrave, it meets the needs for every kid. Lots of sports, lots of learning and supporting programs. Teachers and staffs are the best! They are always there for me. My family is proud of Mulgrave in all ways.
ji hong: my family's dream school~Love Mulgrave(♡ ὅ ◡ ὅ )ʃ♡
Rose Smith: Sorry to see this school has too much discrimination!!
Daniel Wu: They do deserve credit for being really fancy (They literally have someone to respond to the ratings) but they put way more money into making themselves look fancy but boy does their education suck
meg h: eat the rich
Daniel: In my past experience of mulgrave, this has been a fair school. Hospitable environments, a range of activities, and very observant staff members that provide a good learning environments.Things that Mulgrave that have done not-so-well are its food providers. As many people complain about here-and-there, the 'food' tuition is actually around 5k a year. I know Mulgrave have signed a 5-year contract with the food providers, but they are INCREASING prices every term, which is absolutely scamming.Raising the food prices just reinforce the stereotypes of :a. Cafeteriasb. Mulgrave.c. Students' attitudes.I hope this can change Mulgrave attitude towards food. I'd much rather eat at a bad - tasting restaurant then an overpriced one.edit: I wrote this review around 3 years ago. In those three years my attitude towards Mulgrave's education has remained the same and always have been satisfactory and now I have come to especially value to amount the amount of resources Mulgrave provides - on the basis of education, careers, sports, etc. A lot of people have come and asked to me what the main difference between Mulgrave and other schools are, and that would probably be my answer. (Although my attitude towards the cafeteria will always be stagnant, education is the priority)
Raymond Zhang: Mulgrave the best at XC!
Josh “MrSmart”: I love this school!, the teachers are great, the campus is comfortable and very modern, the staff is nice.Recommended.
Erin Griffiths: This is a wonderful school! From the teachers, the administration, the facilities and the overall supportive but still challenging academic environment. I really can’t say enough great things about this school!
Alfred Jeffrey: This is a great school overall, I have many friends who graduated and loved the experience. They provide some of the best programs in Vancouver and the facilities are very modern and up to date. The area surrounding the school is also beautiful and has plenty of nature and great atmosphere.
Daniel Fasihi: good school
刘泽瑞: I love this school, even if I have never stayed in it! I love love love this school. I even love u!

Crofton House School: what do users think?
ching won lee: very like this school,it was incredible and amazing, the school have the greatest education resource and the school also help student to find their hobby and love, all the learning condition is very comfortable
Julia Chen: GREAT SCHOOL!!!
Maleah Alexander: They bit my child’s fingers off and they think they have the right to abuse her
Esmee Alexiadis-Beech: Went to Crofton for 12 years. Made lots of friends in that time, intake years can be a bit chaotic with new people and the general academic aspect of the school gets WILDLY competitive between students in grades 11-12. However, the university counsellors really help relieve some of that stress, of the 12 schools I applied to I got into 11, so if there is any stress around getting into universities, don't worry, you'll have guidance the entire way. and fear not if you decide to take some time off or not go post secondary, you'll get support with that too. The Junior School is great for setting a foundation of forming friendships and allowing the students to slowly find out what they're passionate as they go up through grades 5-7. The variety when it comes to clubs and athletics is extensive, so there will always be something for someone. Keep it up CHS!
zoe holden: We made the right choice to choose Crofton for our kids - curriculum, emotional guidance, physical development...it's all here.
raafa abdulla: Can't believe that most comments are from my students who graduated. Totally agree, Crofton is the best school to teach, to learn and simply to have fun ;).
Sophia .Z: I love your guys school it's awesome !!!
RADLEY Prep: Crofton House is a forward thinking School with an amazing community.
Ciara Mahaffy (2021): Teachers care about every student! Classes are always engaging.
Peter S: this place slaps
Faith Wei: This is a great school!
Megan Verchere: We have found the school to be incredibly inclusive and warm. My daughter suffered fro paralyzing anxiety at the start of her grade 9 year. The counsellors and teachers were incredibly supportive and she has come full circle, Single sex schools are not right for all children so do your research and make your decision for your child. Our experience has been amazing - Crofton House has helped bring out the absolute best in our daughter.
Ritisha Jhamb (2021): I felt so welcome here in all my years. The teachers and students are kind, amazing and they are always there for you. Love this school and I woudn't go anywhere else!
Rachael McKay (2021): Crofton house is a place where I feel like I can get the education I need and everyone deserves to succeed in life. It fosters support between students and teachers and is a wonderful environment to learn in. I would not trade my time at crofton for the world and I look forward to finishing my high school career here.
Akarty Dhesi (2021): Awesome people, caring teachers, and a very supportive environment. I've met some awesome people and have learnt so much from my time here so far :)
Jessie Liang (2021): great school, supportive staff, and loving friends
Moira O'Donoghue (2021): Great school! Changed my life:)
Isabelle Reynolds (2021): Crofton House is such a great school with supportive teachers, classmates and other staff!
Amy Xu (2021): Amazing school! Kind students! Responsible teachers!
Vanessa Kahkesh (2021): I love crofton house
Natalie Boll: I enrolled my daughter in Crofton House after researching schools in Vancouver. I believed this would be the best school for her formative years but was the single-handed biggest mistake I made in my daughter's life. This school is toxic. My daughter suffered. The school covers up bullying and asks for parents to keep it confidential, so many parents didn't know the full extent my daughter suffered. I would not wish this school on any girl during her development years.

Alexander Academy: what do users think?
Will Chin: Graduating Student of 2022 - 2023 here, I would like to start off by saying that I had the privilege of learning here at Alexander Academy for both grades 11 and 12. I would describe Alexander Academy as an environment that is welcoming, supportive and determined to help you succeed. I found that in my time here, I got the help that I needed to help me succeed and to grow into a person that I can be proud of his accomplishments. Another thing I’d like to comment on is the connections and relationships that students here at Alexander Academy form with their teachers, is something you won’t find at most other schools, it is truly something special.
Safina Merchant: Studying at Alexander Academy is a great experience for me. I really like the environment over here, teachers who are always helpful and are willing to answer any questions you have. Students here are from all countries, which makes it much better to know people across the world. The staff is amazing, the teaching and learning method is put out for students perfectly. It's the best high school in Downtown, Vancouver!
Clair Choufani: In 2021, I joined Parent Advisory Council (PAC) at Alexander Academy. I was a member for 2 years.I had the chance to get to know teachers and other school staff through PAC. Additionally, it enabled me to express my opinions, give back, and participate whenever feasible in school-related activities. It was a fantastic way to stay involved and informed about all the current/future events/activities at school. I also was able to meet other parents and interact with them. One of the most significant benefits of being a PAC member for me was that it enabled me to serve as a positive role model for my daughter by volunteering and showing appreciation for the school.Giving back to the staff and students of the school was a wonderful experience for me. If parents wish to get more involved in their children's education, I encourage them to participate as well.
emaelena: Amazing school! Loved my time here so much. Teachers are extremely dedicated, welcoming, friendly and are great at explaining and teaching in various methods. Students are passionate and energetic and make the campus feel like a very safe place. Going to school in Downtown Vancouver is a cool experience.
Linda Petersson: We can highly recommend Alexander Academy for anyone considering placing their child abroad at an international High School. We are a Swedish family and our daughter experienced a fantastic year in Vancouver thanks to the professional teachers, excellent staff and great students that quickly included her and they became new friends, some of them for life I ’m sure.We experienced the best service from the very first contact. Starting with a professional interview between the school and parents/student, great information were given upon starting school and moving to a new country learning new custums, this was very helpful for a student.Through out the year academically, we were satisfied as well as with our daughter self-development progress. We were very impressed with how quick the school where able to switch into online-learning during the COVID-19 situation. Our daughter managed to achieve her goals even what struggle the Corona- pandemic brought us all, for that we will always be grateful to the staff of Alexander Academy and their excellent job with their students. We will truly give them our highest recommendations!!Kind regards,Mrs Linda PeterssonMother of Luna Petersson, Class of 2020
Lyazzat K: An amazing school with students all over the world. Lovely place to study and to have an unforgettable experience.
Focus Onfootball: Love ❤️
Ivan: i saw ur ad. very cool
Joanna Vancouver: Alexander Academy is a wonderful place for local as well as international students to study. The smaller class sizes allow for excellent attention to each student. There are many field trips and opportunities to connect with the community. The school also offers great support to students who are learning English. It is located in a beautiful building in a central location right in the heart of Vancouver.
Liz Prehauser: A life-changing experience. We feel no less than this when we see the changes in our son. From improved grades to a positive outlook, self-esteem and confidence. At Alexander Academy our son is flourishing and is happy. Next year our daughter will attend for sure. The teachers are also wonderful and very dedicated and we feel fortunate to have found this school.

Vancouver Learning Network: what do users think?
Yuhan Liu: This place bad
Rozzi L (Rozzi L): What is asked in test is not what you learned in video.
Markliy Nuash: I genuinely cannot tell which was worse; the teachers or the course structures. In the website, in each lesson, most of the links will not work or be of any use.In Chemistry 12, the quizzes did not allow much time (I believe it was 30 minutes for 20 questions), and a good portion of them were not taught in the material. Also, when I got a question wrong on the quiz on my first try, and wanted to ask my teacher about what I did wrong so that I could prepare myself for the second quiz try, the teacher (I don't remember her name but she was an elderly woman) would rudely reply to my email saying that I was not allowed to. In one case, I was able to ask her about a question I got wrong on a quiz by not mentioning that it was from the quiz I took, and she replied to the question saying that it is a question that did not make sense. This confused me, because I'm not sure how she expected the other students to figure out this question as well.In the assignments, it was more reasonable compared to the quizzes and homework assignments. A majority of the questions were asking to predict the outcome of practical or real-life chemistry experiments, which could be done with much research. However, the marking methods that the teacher used was terrible. I lost marks off for underlining/bolding certain pieces of text, including "water" and "soap" in my list of required materials for an experiment, and writing "sec" instead of "s" or "seconds" for seconds.Ironically, I found the midterms to be the easiest part of the course, and the final to be hard but fair. I received a 92 in the end but the experience during this course was horrendous.
Caitlyn Lai: Takes so long just to grade an assignment. The assignments they give me are definitely not grade 8......
ethan lee: You’re better off doing in person summer school at your local school district than doing online schooling at VLN.
Andy Joregensen: a 4 year old could make a better schooling system.
Ethan Yen: Do not attend unless you have previously taken the course and know what you are doing, because the videos provided do an utterly, and comedically poor job of explaining content. In several cases, they do not provide you with the resources to complete questions (ie. do not provide you with equations or explanations as to why things work). Absolutely terrible.
Moe Skroob: One of the teachers I encountered was completely and utterly incompetent. He never responded to emails, marked things ridiculously slowly, and the work he gave us was inconsistent, not to mention false. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Patrick Liu: Writing exams there were ok. The timing just pulled back a bit because many people were writing exams there and examiners had to give all instructions there.
Hui Yan: It’s an excellent place to go!!!
Owen: Amazing!
Tasman Millen: I can only recommend it if you already know the material and want to get credits easily (for CLE 10 or a language you know). Otherwise you will never actually learn anything.
Clara Jones: I was doing a grade 8 quiz on probability and a question requiring the quadratic formula that is only taught in grade 10 & above just came in...how am I supposed to get decent grades with things like this??? This is just one of the problems, there are many others.
Superior Fish: thank you VLN for the average boost! :D
serena: I am taking 9 courses and it's absolutely terrible.Science 8- ridiculously long, assignments do not correlate to the learning material provided. ex. after learning the 3 lines of defense i was told to put an egg in white vinegar to see the shell melt off.Pe 9- both science and pe required a terrible amount of money. i had to go out and by every sports ball in existence and for science i needed to find myself a syringe? like hello?french 8 - i had to draw for my final project. draw.art 8- one of the courses i actually somewhat enjoyed, i will say that i did have to go out and buy a ton of supplies
suowei Wu: Here is my review on three different grade 12 courses from VLN:1. Economics 12 - this course was the MOST stressful because of the inconsistent and unnecessarily complicated load of tests and assignments. Even though the course material was very long and tedious to memorize, I’d say difficulty is only moderate as concepts were generally easy to understand. However, the problem is the actual correlation between course material and the assignments/tests. ALL of the assignments/tests BARELY had ANYTHING to do with the actual material taught. This was incredibly frustrating and the quizzes were UNREALISTICALLY long. A ten question quiz(worth ~2.5%)took an average of TWO HOURS to complete. The assignments were WAY beyond the course material and I had to do look up UNIVERSITY level economics to do the questions. The course material did not teach ANYTHING helpful to do the questions. On a last note, the teacher for this course is very unresponsive. I had to email multiple times through this course and only got a reply 1-2 weeks later. I originally took this course as a grade booster but ended up actually brought down my GPA. Overall, unless you want to make complications for yourself and stress yourself out, I highly discourage anyone to take this course.2. Mandarin 12 - although this course was relatively easy for me because I already had a strong foundation of Chinese, I do not recommend it to anyone that isn’t exceeding/proficient in Chinese language.3. Calculus 12 - honestly it was okay for me only because I could understand the concepts through YouTube videos on calculus. The course material itself felt very rushed and made it 100 times more difficult than it actually was. Bottom line, if you take this course, I’d recommend to skim through the lectures and watch YouTube videos instead to understand the concepts. Also, the teacher for this course never responds and puts in the absolute minimum to help students. Whenever I’d get a question wrong on the assignments, she would only make it as wrong and not even circle or mark up what I did wrong. It makes me feel like she doesn’t actually know how to do calculus and that she’s just marking the papers up with an answer key and calling it a day. This course is all about self-learning. You will not get any help from the teacher or the course material. To be honest, I wasn’t even going to write a review, but I think it’s important to have people aware of what they may be getting themselves into. In general, I think VLN should do a lot better at providing useful and comprehendible courses. It was mentally draining and I’m just glad I never have to take another course from this school again.
Fred Zhang: Our world is not a perfect place, but it's wonderful! 😄 We can say the same about VLN.Thanks to VLN for providing me the learning opportunity to study higher level courses earlier!I completed Math 9, Math 10, Science 10, Programming 11, and Chem 12 at VLN. My teachers from these courses are as knowledgeable and helpful as teachers at Byng. I scored 95%+ in those courses. If we focus on what we receive, we will be happy :) Thank you, VLN!
A People: I signed up for a vln psychology course. I was not expecting it, but I learnt so much about mental illnesses, especially depression. In fact, I also got to enjoy first-hand experiences of being depressed which let me remember the symptoms better. I recommend people who are interested in psychology to try out the course.
Red Crab: there is nearly a 100% chance that none of the links will work or not be of any use in lessons, especially chem 12.
A Person: the quizzes are made so poorly that it was easier to solve the question than to decipher the meaning of the question through the poor grammar
