Jen T: Beware of Kathy’s training approach - I am writing this review because I don’t want anyone to go through the nightmare we experienced with Kathy’s methods. It may seem like it’s working in the moment (it convinced me for awhile), but that’s because it’s working for all the wrong reasons. Her approach began with some positive reinforcement, but gradually became more punitive with time. Kathy’s training philosophy is steeped in the highly outdated and de-bunked dominance theory, which was increasingly revealed as time went on. Her latest recommendations to flood my dog with his triggers completely backfired (which I reluctantly tried since she convinced me to do it), and caused him to develop severe phobias in his own neighbourhood. Not only did he become terrified to leave the house, he began to show stress responses as soon as I picked up his leash. I had to carry him out of the house just so he could go to the bathroom, and after I told Kathy the impact of her recommendations, she had zero constructive recommendations whatsoever. Rather, she insisted her approach works on dogs as long as they are healthy - despite my warning her he was showing signs of anxiety. Not only did her recommendations leave me with a highly anxious dog with severe phobias and panic disorder, Kathy did not bother to follow up with us after she left my dog in the worst state of his life.After I cut ties with Kathy, I hired a highly reputable Animal Behaviour and Welfare Scientist with her PhD. She was appalled at Kathy’s punitive methods, which included a “firm correction” of dangling my dog in the air by his head collar for 1-2 minutes after Kathy unsuccessfully demonstrated a “lift and pull” on my dog’s leash - she didn’t heed his warnings, so of course he tried attacking her. Not only did our behaviourist say Kathy’s punishments CONTRIBUTED to and worsened my dog’s fear aggression, she also said these methods would qualify as animal cruelty, as our behaviourist is an international court expert in animal welfare and law. Our behaviourist’s recommendations have been completely opposite to what Kathy’s recommendations were. I was told that Kathy’s quick-fix punishments (shutting down every bark and growl) changed my dog’s behaviour without changing his underlying emotional state - fear. When I used Kathy’s approach, his regressions grew bigger and bigger without warning because he’d been punished for communicating with me. Now that I’m using my behaviourist’s methods, I am shocked that Kathy never taught me a basic counter-conditioning protocol of engage-disengage, which changes an animals’s emotional response to a trigger. My dog caught on really quickly, and it completely transformed him. I am shocked that a so-called professional went straight to trigger flooding instead, which traumatized both my dog and myself.Don’t make the same mistake as I did in working with Kathy's approach - they may work in the short-term, but they work for all the wrong reasons and the results will not last - it means your dog will suppress their behaviours because they are forced to, while their mental health needs are not being addressed. Still not convinced, since you’re seeing progress with her recommendations? Well, I went through that exact same process, as it’s easy to be blinded by the short-term gains. Then ask yourself why she doesn’t publish her last name anywhere on her website, despite being the store owner and trainer - it’s so no one can hold her accountable to her methods. Ask yourself why Kathy doesn’t describe her training philosophy on her site - it’s because it’s highly outdated and abusive. If you research reputable trainers, they list all of the courses they take to stay current in the field - and in my chats with other trainers, they have all said that Kathy’s methods are antiquated approaches from over 20 years ago. I'm glad we cut ties with Kathy, and I’m looking forward to my dog living his best life now that we have our behaviourist's guidance!

S M: I just want a grooming salon to do as I ask for grooming (and of course keep my pet safe while in their care).After filling out their forms with explicit instructions, dropping in before the appointment to discuss, and having the discussion again when I dropped my dog off, (confirming my wishes not to have any hair trimming other than the sanitary trim), the paws were trimmed anyway.I intentionally went to considerable lengths before the appointment to make sure we understood each other, and it is fruitless and frustrating that the message doesn’t get to the person doing the work.I received apologies from the grooming staff. I reached out to the owner, who did not respond, even after I confirmed that she had received my message. The lack of response from the owner speaks volumes about the lack of professionalism, lack of customer service, and lack of principled business practices.
