Matthew Safoniuk: I don’t often leave reviews, but I had to leave a review for FTLO.I started taking FTLO beginner course in September of 2022. I was very anxious because I didn’t know anyone, but I’m glad I went! All the people there were absolutely amazing! It’s a very enthusiastic environment! Matt did a great job of keeping track of everyone and making everyone feel seen. I got a lot of help from Matt and Rand and look forward to hopefully getting more in the future!
Victoria Chung: One of the best volleyball clinics I’ve been a part of EVER!For the beginner clinics I’ve attended in the past, it always felt like a high school P.E. class with no concrete points of improvement. The people in those volleyball communities were unfortunately not very inclusive and did not pay close attention to what I needed to become a better volleyball player.Training with FTLO, specifically with Matt and Rand, completely changed my mind. I was hesitant to sign up for the following session but I now understand why people sign up for FTLO season after season. It’s because the coaches actually care! They’re both vulnerable with their volleyball experience, validating in the right way and they pinpoint exactly what you need to improve to fine tune the techniques to be rally ready. Plus, the community they have managed to create is one of the most welcoming group of people I’ve met.If you’re looking for a place to improve your volleyball skills, I HIGHLY recommend you check this one out.
Fabrice Vieillesse: I’ve always been a little anxious or intimidated with trying a new sport for fear of getting ridiculed for being bad at it. After turning 30 and a few health issues, I decided that it was now or never for me to take care of my body through playing sports. I’m so glad I signed up for the FTLO programs. Matt provides a safe and fun environment for us to learn and grow together. It’s been fantastic being coached by Matt and Rand - they’re super patient and clear and encouraging in their coaching approach. Also meeting new friends is what brings me there every time I don’t feel like exercising. I’m already signed up for the next season!
Anthony Chen: I speak from the following perspective:- beginner level player- took the adult 2022 summer Vancouver grass clinicI think the FTLO beginner class is a great way to improve your overall volleyball skills. Heavy emphasis was made to improve your setting and bumping skills (with some emphasis on spiking) via fun drills and games.Since it is an adult beginner class, there were no fitness intensive physicals nor drills.Matt and the assistant coaching staffs provided great feedback on my technique. It also helped that Matt incorporated humor in his teachings which made things more enjoyable.
Thomas Pan: I’ve been meaning to leave a review for a while but didn’t know how to do it justice. If you’re looking for a volleyball clinic this is the one, the coaches really care about delivering both a fun and valuable experience. As someone who played only a handful of volleyball decades ago, working with Matt and his coaches, as well as the other attendees made me understand why it’s called “For the love of volleyball”; The clinic is constructive but also at the end of the day, a ton of fun.TLDR: Matt and his team are dope people just sign up 😄
Braelyn G: I’m so glad I decided to join FTLO this summer! I haven’t played volleyball in a long time and have never played grass volleyball, but the beginner group consisted of individuals with a variety of skill levels and experience with volleyball so I felt very comfortable playing. I was a bit hesitant to join by myself but the FTLO community is so welcoming and inclusive, and I met a lot of great people! Our training night had both beginners and intermediates, and while Matt mostly coached on the intermediate side, the coaches on the beginner side were very knowledgeable and gave great tips. Each session included a variety of drills and some gameplay at the end. I definitely feel like I have improved my volleyball skills over the course of the season. All in all, would 100% recommend!
Sophia Chang: Had a lot fun doing the train & play program with FTLO this summer! As someone who is relatively new to volleyball and completely new to grass vball, this supportive learning environment was exactly what I needed to feel comfortable. The program allows you to focus on techniques and getting repetition in more than you would in a game. Highly recommend for people of any level, plus you also get to meet a great community of people too!
Christine L: FTLO coaches were friendly and approachable when requesting additional feedback to improve volleyball skills. Fun atmosphere and good times. 5 stars :)
Erica Sun: FLTO is an amazing volleyball clinic!! Fantastic for absolute beginners and those who have played before and are looking to improve their skills. The clinic really focused on getting techniques correct and practicing the skills with effective drills. At the end of every session you also get to put what you learned into practice with game play. Also the coaches are all fantastic. They offer really practical tips and you see an immediate improvement in your technique. They are all really approachable - felt really comfortable going to them with specific questions. If you feel you are struggling with certain skills they take the time to answer your questions and coach you 1:1. Also, everyone participating in the clinic is super friendly and supportive. Would highly recommend if you are looking to start playing volleyball or looking to sharpen up your skills. Regardless of your skill level, there is always something new for everyone.
Houria Afshar: Very fun summer clinic, recommend!
K: One of the best clinics I've been to and I've tried 3 so far. Matt is an excellent coach and is a natural teacher. I started with grass volleyball post-covid to get myself out again and to challenge myself in a sport I wasn't familiar with. Being someone who's a bit anxious, the friendly, inclusive, and fun environment helped a lot! Not to mention, instructions and the programs are clear, intentional, and well structured to help any level players. Whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or even advanced player. Can't wait for more programs!!
Margarita Zakharova: A huge thanks to FTLO!!! I am that person who always loved volleyball, but never really got a chance. Thanks to Matt and the awesome team for the opportunity to start playing VB at any age/skill level/goal and meet amazing people.
Morgan Waugh: This has been the third clinic that I’ve participated in under the tutelage of Matt and Rand, and I couldn’t be happier with my volleyball growth. While my skills can be inconsistent on solid gym floor, they have made the transition to grass easy.FTLO sessions consist of skill building and game play. It is a great place to build on all levels of skill, to challenge yourself on new terrain, and to extend your learning in volleyball.FTLO is truly inclusive to all abilities. Matt and his team of excellent coaches should be extremely proud of the volleyball community they have helped built.
Cristal Tillyer: Amazing experience. Thoughtful coaches, great people and no judgments. All volleyball experiences are welcome. Also the price can't be beat for the level of coaching you get from this clinic. Outstanding (chef's kiss)
Andrew Qiu: FTLO Volleyball is an amazing clinic for anyone looking to learn volleyball from the ground up or to brush up on their skills. Coaching was nothing short of excellent and I received lots of individual, specific feedback. The community and environment at FTLO is incredibly encouraging, which helps give room for beginners to make mistakes and develop. As a beginner, I don't think that I could have chosen a better place to start volleyball. Thank you Matt and the rest of the coaching team for making all of this possible!
Simon: I had a blast learning from Matt from FTLO. Matt showed unbiased attention to all his adult learners, but payed special attention to newer players. I would suggest people who do join the adult clinics in the future, and already have some experience, to directly ask him for feedback on specific things so that he can be more specific on how to help you.My only caveat was that the clinic was always done outdoors. Weather may be sporadic in Vancouver and sometimes hard to tell if the session will be postponed. The grass at the location was also difficult to navigate especially if you like playing barefoot. All in all the experience from the adult clinic was very good. People there were very friendly and willing to learn. I would recommend FTLO especially if you are a beginner, wanting to learn the basics.
Philip Y: FTLO was an awesome time. Matt, and all of the coaches, made it a great experience to learn, meet new people, and just have fun. I definitely recommend anyone to join.
The Angry Baker: Great coaches and friendly people! I was nervous going into these clinics, worried that the other players would be snobby or that the coaches would be too demanding or aloof. In fact, everyone was super nice and supportive. The coaches take the time to include everyone and they make the effort to have plenty of one-on-one time so that every person can get better. The environment was positive and best of all it was fun! Thanks and we will definitely be back next summer!
Andrew Chan: Fun group of people who are dedicated in teaching volleyball.
Kat: Good times, great learning environment and awesome coaches!
Lisa Bombini: Specific feedback about how I was doing was very helpful, and the coaches were both kind, encouraging, and very skilled. It was a friendly environment, and participants were supportive of one another. I learned a lot from the drills and had a lot of fun!! Each class helped me with something different, and nothing felt repetitive. I loved it all!

Ray: complete money grab. not surprised by the other reviews. you have to do everything including setting up the nets. they don’t reschedule games they will just end the season. My buddy got suspended 3 games because someone on the other team tried fighting him…do yourself a favour & join a better competitive league
Emily Zamani: Very disorganized! They cancel your games without any notice or cut your games short.
W J: “Beach” Volleyball - played on terminal ave. Courts are filled with large stones, chunks of concrete, rusty metal, broken glass.Equipment quality is very poor. Nets sag, balls are under inflated, court lines askew, sand is completely uneven and forms large depressions near the net. Did I mention all the debris that makes digging legitimately dangerous? If your opponent misses a game you will NOT be compensated, despite the rules saying you will. Zero incentive not to abandon the league.Fringe benefits on their website are non existent.Stay far, far away for urban rec. Play any other league or self organize. Unless you hate money, then by all means, UR will take if off your hands and flip you off by way or “customer service”.
Husein Rahemtulla: Not surprised by the reviews here, very poorly organized league and would not recommend to anyone to sign up.
Nadim Moloo: Very poorly organized, inconsistent rules and enforcement, terrible communication and processes.
Corbin Lowe: Poorly run cash grab company. Unfortunately a good example of a monopoly who are happy to continue running a terrible business as long as fees get paid.
Aaron Kozak: The city needs to change its policies so organizations don't have a monopoly on field and gym space
William Thomas: Signed up for a league by accident, called in and Jason sorted it all out the same day. Very strong customer service!
Ritesh Maisuria: Love their softball league! Great ppl!
Gordon Chen: Absolutely the worst and most greedy league in the city.
David Stanulescu: I joined because I thought I was going to have fun. Turns out that a serious injury (torn ACL) does not warrant any sympathy or refund for the games I did not play as a result. I was hit with quotes like "no additional profit was made from team" because I did not withdraw while still waiting to find out my diagnosis. To me it is clear, they do not care about customers, it is very profit driven.
Rob: Joke of a league
Edmund Gu: Poor ValueOne of the most expensive volleyball leagues in Vancouver while having one of the shortest playtimes. We only get 2 x 40min games every weekOver $1200 per team for 11 sessions + playoffsOnly 1hr20min per session (which they conveniently leave out in the description)Their equipment quality is meh
mario manguera: Muy buen hábito de diversión, pero le falta una limpieza más profunda aún tiene muchas rocas y metales enterrados
zlybax o'mally NukeToronto: There are a ton of nets! 25, I believe? Yet I've never seen anyone play here. Ever. I'm not sure what this place was ever set up for, but I'm willing to bet it's a great place to play if you enjoy beach volleyball. All that said, I understand it's set to be eliminated in order to make room for a new Pfizer facility. Whether it's intended as a production facility, or simply logistics/administration, I don't know for certain.Enjoy it while it lasts!
Frank Kaminsky (Frank K): Great music, friendly staff, and fantastic volleyball. However, lots of rocks and sharp objects in the sand! A couple people injured themselves stepping on sharp objects! Seriously need to consider raking the sand and bringing in new sand.
ernesto terceros: I like, is very good!
Hanna Sookarow: We love Urban Beach! All the staff are so friendly, enjoy stopping to have a chat between games. Music's always bumpin.
Nancy Montserrat Rodríguez Altamirano: We play every summer, you can share time and fun with your friends and of course, play volleyball beach
J P: Terrible organization who unfortunately has somewhat of a monopoly on organized sports in the city. Absolutely 0 empathy for its members during COVID-19; UR refused to refund either portions or the entirety of league fees that were cancelled due to the pandemic, instead choosing to offer a meaningless credit for future play in 2021. Basically took interest-free loans/cash grabs from member fees and used it to line their own pockets, while providing no service in the interim. 2020 Spring will be my one and only time registering with UR to play any recreational sport.
Zoe C: I've played with many friends in Vancouver so am very excited about the Surrey league, closer to where I live. Great organizers that respond quickly and are very nice. Thanks for all your hard work guys, especially throughout covid regulation changes! Shoutout to #mike
